Halloween Safety

10/24/2023

The Halloween season has arrived; with this in mind the safety of our children is paramount. The convicted Sex Offenders of Jefferson Davis Parish must adhere to strict State guidelines during this time and are monitored closely during these activities. There will be additional Deputies assisting with patrol during the designated Trick-R-Treat hours for added safety.

Louisiana Criminal Code RS: 14:313.1 states, It shall be unlawful for any person convicted of, or pleads guilty to a Sex Offence specified in RS: 24:932, to distribute candy or other gifts to persons under the age of eighteen years of age on or concerning Halloween, Mardi Gras, Easter, Christmas, or any other recognized holiday for which generally candy is distributed or other gifts given to persons under eighteen years of age.

The Jeff Davis Sheriffs Office advises parents to be aware of Sex Offenders living in their neighborhoods. Parents are advised to review the Jeff Davis Sheriffs Office website for the location and photographs of Sex Offenders who reside within the areas they are planning to allow their children to go Trick-R-Treating in.

Sheriff Ivy Woods urges the following Halloween Safety Tips for your Child.

  • Use reflective tape on their child's costume and bag.
  • If possible, choose a light color for the costume.
  • Since masks can restrict a child's vision, try non-toxic face paint or makeup.
  • Supply your child with a glow stick or flashlight to help them see and be seen.
  • Make sure your child's costume is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
  • Go to familiar neighborhoods where you know the residents.
