In Custody death at parish jail

On April 3, 2022, at approximately 4:11 pm deputies working in the Jeff Davis parish jail observed a male inmate in distress inside his cell.  Medical employees at the jail administered CPR until Med Express ambulance service arrived on scene. 

The inmate, Cody Joe Leger 43, of 9440 Pine Island Hwy, Jennings was pronounced dead by the Jennings American Legion hospital  emergency room physician at 4:33 pm.

The Jefferson Davis parish coroner responded to the scene and is investigating the death along with Jefferson Davis parish Sheriff detectives. 

At this time, the cause of death is believed to be related to medical conditions Leger was suffering from.  An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted tomorrow.

Leger was booked into the parish jail on Tuesday March 29, 2022, after a court appearance on charges of entering or remaining on premises after forbidden, Violation of protective orders, simple assault, Failure to pay child support, Domestic abuse battery with strangulation, domestic abuse battery with child endangerment and simple assault. 

Leger's bond was set at $12,500.00.  Leger was transported to the hospital on Tuesday, March 29th, shortly after being booked into the jail.  He was released by the hospital that same day, 03/29 and was being monitored by jail and medical personnel for several medical conditions.
