Fraudulent Phone Calls

02/28/2020

Several people throughout Jefferson Davis Parish have reported receiving  a phone call from a Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff's Deputy claiming that they have a warrant for their arrest or a family members arrest.  The alleged deputy says that by paying a fine or a fee the warrant will be recalled, canceled, cleared or removed.  DO NOT fall for this SCAM! No law enforcement agency will call to advise you of a warrant and then request any type of payment over the phone to "pay it off".

These scammers are using a spoof application that make caller ID think the call is coming from a valid local number and in some cases a valid Sheriff's Office number.  With these advancements in technology, Caller ID is no longer an accurate way to determine the identity of the caller.  The SCAMMER tells the victim that they can purchase a money order, gift card, or cash card (prepaid debit card, Green Dot card, etc.) and give the card number over the phone therefore, paying the fine and having the warrant dismissed. This scam is occurring across the United States.

To avoid becoming the victim of a scam, always be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls, never give money or personal information to someone with whom you don't have ties and did not initiate contact, and trust your instincts: if an unknown caller makes you uncomfortable or says things that don't sound right, hang up.  If you think the call may be legitimate then ask for the person's name, hang up and dial our office at 337-821-2100 and as to speak to that deputy by name.

You should never call the number that a suspected scammer gives you.  If you ever question the authenticity of a Jefferson Davis Parish Deputy, call 337-821-2100 or visit our office.
