03/09/2018

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call today around noon, at the Lacassine high school,  reference to a firearm on the school grounds.  School officials were informed by a student, another student had mentioned that he had a weapon in his vehicle. The student made the statement during a conversation about school shootings.

School officials notified the Sheriff’s office and a search of the student’s vehicle revealed he had transported a shotgun in the vehicle onto school property. Sheriff’s deputies consulted with District attorney, Michael Cassidy and determined the student had violated the statute for carrying a firearm in a gun free zone. Sheriff’s deputies took the student into custody and the weapon was secured without any incident.

Cody Howard, 17, of 19631 Atterberry road, Iowa was charged with 14:95.2 Carrying a firearm by a student on school property. Howard was booked into the parish jail.

Sheriff Woods wants parents and students to understand clearly, that the school administrators, law enforcement and the District attorney’s office together want to make sure ALL students are safe while traveling to, attending school, school related functions,  and on their return home. Any threats of violence, or the carrying of weapons on or near school grounds will be dealt with aggressively, under the provisions of state law and school policies.
