Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

02/26/2018

On Saturday, 24 February 2018, at about 2329 hours, Deputies while patrolling Hwy 90 near Welsh observed a white Toyota Corolla swerving across the white solid line. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at the intersection of Highway 90 and Shellie Drive. Deputies approached the vehicle and discovered there were three occupants. The driver, Riley Mouton, 34, of 210 East Academy Road, Jennings, and two passengers, Aaron Curby Brown, 37, of 418 East Academy Road, Jennings and Steven John Edwards 40, of 1210 West Street, Jennings.

Deputies noticed a odor of alcoholic beverage while talking with the driver and occupants of the vehicle. Mouton was also found to be driving under suspension when deputies checked his record.  Deputies requested a consent to search the vehicle and the search revealed a clear bag containing three additional clear bags containing narcotics. One bag contained a crystal like substance believed to be methamphetamine (weighing about 6.3 grams using the patrol scale). Another bag contained eleven white, rock-like, substances believed to be crack/cocaine (weighing about 3.4 grams using the patrol scale). The last bag contained seventeen multi-colored pills believed to be ecstasy.

Steven Edwards admitted the drugs were his and no one else knew about them being inside the vehicle. Deputies arrested Edwards for possession of CDS I with intent to distribute and two counts of possession of schedule II with intent to distribute. Mouton was issued citation for driving under suspension and Brown was issued citation for open container and both were released. Edwards was booked into the parish jail with no bond.
