Deputy Recieves Respect For Law Award

06/25/2014

Deputy Gale Richard, a D.A.R.E. Officer of the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office has been awarded the “Respect For Law Award” by the Jennings Optimist Club.  Deputy Richard was nominated for this year’s award by Sheriff Woods.  Deputy Richard has been a Deputy in Jefferson Davis Parish for over four years.  She began her career here as a communications 911 dispatcher.  During her time as a dispatcher she became a Louisiana State P.O.S.T. Certified Deputy by attending the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Regional Training Academy.

Deputy Richard has been a D.A.R.E. Officer for the past two years after being accepted by a state level interview board.  She underwent a two week D.A.R.E. Officer training course including courses on preparing lesson plans, presenting lesson plans, and several other topics.

Deputy Richard was also given the opportunity to attend the 2013 International D.A.R.E. Conference which was held in Cincinnati, Ohio.  It was at this conference that Deputy Richard was introduced to a display called “Hidden in Plain Sight”.  Deputy Richard was so impressed with the concept of the display that she created her own model to present to Sheriff Woods.  The display is a mock up of a teenager’s bedroom that exhibits articles that are commonly found there.  These ordinary articles can be clues to involvement in gang activity, violent acts, illegal drug use, eating disorders, drinking disorders, bullying and many other problems young people are facing today.  Deputy Richard said, “When I saw this display, I knew we needed this in our communities!”. Deputy Richard has presented her display all over the parish and surrounding parishes have sent teachers and D.A.R.E. Officers to view the display.  She reminds us, “The Red Flags are usually there, we have to do our part to recognize them.  As trends change so does our display.”

Please join us in congratulating Deputy Richard!
